LEBBEUS WOODS RADICAL RECONSTRUCTION PDF

His body of theoretical work and extraordinary drawings have served as inspiration for architects, artists, and legions of students. Three projects for Sarajevo, Havana, and San Francisco define new approaches to the reconstruction of buildings and urban fabric damaged by unpredictable and largely uncontrollable forces of both human and natural origin. Such transformations are not only of physical structures and spaces but, more significantly, of the ways of living they sustain. The majority of these renderings of dazzling color and creativity have never been published or exhibited before. Lebbeus Woods has focused on theory and experimental projects since

He furthers the discussion started in War and Architecture on a radical reconstruction of Sarajevo, but also includes Havana as an example of an area economically oppressed by the embargo, and San Francisco as an area where natural disaster has changed the landscape of the city, in this case due to earthquakes. The essays are well thought out and are not above the scope of the layman reading about architecture for the first time.

The visual images are absolutely stunning, in color and in black and white. Of the three studies, Sarajevo is the most compelling, followed by San Francisco with its shard houses and seismicity, moving in waves with the earthquake instead of fighting it. Stunning, beautiful, futuristic in its ideas and images. When I reconsider Anarchitecture the point that I find most memorable is that when one chooses to participate in the production of a work, one is essentially saying Yes, I agree with and support the values it and its initiator s represent.

An important component of this idea is that the built environment is the physical manifestation of the social structure that created it.

To rebuild areas as they were before denies the fact that the social structure has changed or should change due to the destruction. Virtuoso draftsman.

Career[ edit ] Woods studied architecture at the University of Illinois and engineering at Purdue University. While Woods called himself an architect he never received a degree in architecture nor was he ever licensed to practice architecture. He also produced paintings for the Indianapolis Art Museum during that period. In he turned exclusively to theory and experimental projects. The author of nine books, he was a recipient of the Chrysler Design Award. Interested in what would happen if the architect was freed from conventional restrictions, he did not intend to generate and construct a design proposal of a specific geometrical form in order to approach an existing architectural problem.

Radical Reconstruction

After destruction, it is not possible to immediately resume the old, disrupted ways of living. Indeed, this can only be done by regressing to them, led by the resurgence of social, political and professional institutions under whose authority they once existed. But too much has been suffered and lost, too much learned at too great a price to be quickly forgotten. The spirit of invention that makes survival possible under the extreme conditions created by destruction makes possible the new ways of living in a city that will, in a sense, always remain in a paradoxical state of destruction and construction.
