The chain of Mount Lebanon determines the character of the country, for its position parallel to the coast controls climate and rainfall. Altitudes which range from zero to meters allow the existence of a varied landscape. The double mountain ranges and their increased aridity to the east have discouraged traffic with the hinterland, and to this day accentuate the western orientation of the coastal dwellers. It is not surprising, therefore, that large-scale architectural enterprises were undertaken during the rule of foreign powers, such as the Roman, and though these frequently reveal strong local characteristics, they are nonetheless of foreign origin. Independent Lebanese architecture is limited to residential construction and to modest religious and public buildings.
